Description: The Merchants Bridge is a railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi River between St. Louis, MO and Venice, IL and serves as a primary artery in the east-west railway corridor. The original structure opened in 1889, and reconstruction of the bridge began 129 years later in 2018. Veritas Steel fabricated 13,700 tons of structural steel together with Chicago, IL based Walsh Group for the new bridge, which includes three new truss structures with each individual truss spanning a length of 517 feet, 6 inches. These new trusses increased the single-track rail bridge’s load capacity to two tracks and boosted rail tonnage by 49 percent.
